The brainchild of Droga5 was to use the mars rover ‘Curiosity’ as a mascot for Qantas Frequent Flyer’s new campaign.
Utilising a number of shots from Michael Corridore, we were able to put clean and colourful backgrounds together for the Rover and talent. This included building and adding in a plane that the client wanted to see driving past outside the window.
A ‘real’ physical copy of the rover had been built for the TVC but was unavailable for the shoot, as such we were commissioned to recreate one entirely in 3D. Fraser and team worked hard to recreate ‘Curiosity’. It obviously had to match the physical TVC model, however this was a great opportunity to add to our version additional details found on the real Curiosity currently roaming Mars (we referenced NASA pics for this). HDR domes shot on location captured 360 degree angles and full aperture stops of the environment, and were used to add reflections, match lighting and really help embed Curiosity into the scene.
The three additional, isolated shots of the rover on a white background, gave us a further opportunity to show off the complexity of the all-CGI Curiosity, in a clean and neutral surrounding.
